I think there are images showing more good conduct chevrons being worn by old soldiers but in some instances they're wearing more than their length of service entitles them to.

Yes, I recall that Grumpy/Muerrisch in particular has often posted about them. The blog (in 5-parts) is exceptionally good with its combination of references and accompanying photos.

I had thought that there was a limit to how many GCB could be worn in service dress or BD before or during WW2?
Also, could the stripes be reduced or removed if the wearer had an infraction?
For example, how many years would a soldier be serving with three stripes on the lower sleeve, or is length of service irrelevant?
( am referring to the interwar/ WW2 period)
