Crowned !
Who lost the crown.....
(actually Pattern 11390/1939, made by Gaunt.) There are quite a number of Lpl Irish crownless badges ... it is thought that republican Irish wore the badge but removed the (English) crown Any comments ? I have of two of this one and another 1908 version without crown 284741598272 Last edited by KLR; 03-04-22 at 05:02 PM. |

This was probably what happened to my Donegal Militia . . !
It took me years to find a suitable crown. Rob |

And just why would a Republican enlist in the first place? Seems a bit far fetched. I can't imagine a conscripted man being allowed by the RSM to get away with this adulteration. This is a WW2 badge and Irish Independence was in 1922 so any WW2 conscript could easily have got on the ferry to Dublin to avoid being drafted into the Army.

I don't think for one minute the crowns were removed during the owners military service.
Done at a later date by original owners or relative. Tony.

I think Alan is surely right
Tony may well be too "I don't think for one minute the crowns were removed during the owners military service. Done at a later date by original owners or relative." As I noted, I have also a Pattern 1908 Lpl Irish without crown [I've seen others] - when, of course, Ireland was part of GB ! |

Removed crowns
I have read somewhere that in WWII Free French paratroopers wore the Parachute Regiments cap badge minus the crown, there is an example in Len Whittakers book of a Parachute Regiments cap badge with the wings shortened, crown removed and a US star added which was worn by Jedburghs.

I have a "Jedburgh wing", bought in a junk shop in Peterborough years ago, but being just a Para Regt badge with its dog in a basket removed......
Then again, it may not have a star on it. |

This is true but they were French and not a British regiment.
Not sure that there was French contingent in the 8th King's. |

Alan, this is intriguing ! can you expand on "French contingent" in the 8th King's - as 8th indicated before 1881 !?

It's irony - there was not one so there would not be any French paratroopers cutting the crowns off 8th King's badges.
