58th Div “Brodie helmet”

Apologies, I have no idea about whether this item is ‘ok’ or not.

Looks to me quite a rough and uncharacteristic rendition of this sort of sign. The 4th London questionnaire reply implies a red silhouette of a castle, but I may be reading too much into the wording. Most other helmet designs seem to be simple, solid and quite competently depicted.

You could well be right. I thought it looked a little rough and possibly too big? I think, though, that the recent 58th Division history by David Martin has a WW1-period photograph with this design on a soldier’s tin helmet, but I can’t quite remember and am away from home at the moment.

I think your point about it being “uncharacteristic” may be spot on.

IWM

Online discussion

(This was the same photo illustrated in Martin’s book so my memory was a little off).
Apologies for taking the thread off on a tangent.

I couldn't access the IWM pic but if it's the same as the other illustration, it's a very elaborate sign indeed! And please don't apologise about the direction of the discussion. It's all grist to the mill and part of the fun and fascination of posting a thread.

Hello there,

There is no picture on the IWM site, I added it for the description underneath which was simply, “A white circle on black background within which a white tower with flying flap[sic]”. (Surely a typo for flag). I thought this IWM description and the photograph in my other link were a lot less elaborate than the eBay example I posted adding credence to your point about that example being uncharacteristic. I should think this IWM ‘white tower’ is not too dissimilar to the red one the 3/4th Bn used.

It would be interesting to see the IWM picture. Can it be accessed without visiting the museum itself?

I don’t think so. I am hoping they will get more photographs up soon as they seem to be in the process of doing it.

Nice badge, Matti.

Regards all,

Chris
