Default DLI - What is it?

Hi All,

OK, so I am relatively new at British Cap badges, and as I am sure happens a lot, exuberance overrules the brain, which says RESEARCH! While the heart cries BUY! BUY! BUY!

I picked this up a while ago. Now my question is this: KK says DLI had WM badges circa WW1. (ref 681) I pondered this badge, and it seems to be Brass / GM.

I spoke to a learned friend, and he asked if it might be WM, just dirty, or been in the ground/ badly stored. I have looked hard at it, and I believe it is Brass.

So, Is it Bona Fide? Is it circa Great War? Or should I just put it under the leg of my wonky table?

Any opinions most welcome.

Regards, Tim

Blackened brass were worn by Durham School OTC and by the DLI TF battalion.

Yours looks a ground-dug one w/m one that has tarnished,

To my poor eyes it looks like a bronzed badge.

probably a ground dug white metal badge. Try a little metal polish on a cotton bud on the rear.

Yes looks like an earth darkened WM DLI cap badge or a blackened 6th Battalion TF DLI cap badge.

I would try and clean a section at the back of the badge and see what the base metal is.

Regards Dean.

Hello Tim, the badge didn't look ground dug to me, I'd go with TF.
I wouldn't clean it, but that's just me!
Cheers Tony.

Tim,
I'm pretty sure it is just a grubby standard pattern Wm badge! Sadly being in the soil tends to leave its mark and it is often difficult without drastic cleaning to restore the original finish? I would start by cleaning the back first just to make sure it is Wm, had it been a blackened TF badge, then remnants of the blackening would possibly have remained and from the images I cannot see that! The badge is certainly genuine!

Andy

Thanks everyone. I do love the fact there are so many folks here willing to help out.

Guess there are several possibilities, and whatever the outcome, I am happy that it is at least a good badge.

I kind of like that occasionally things are thrown up which are not black & white - keeps the hobby interesting.

Thanks again to all

Cheers, Tim

PS, a little light cleaning has revealed WM, thanks to all for taking an interest.
