Major Dick Winters, RIP
I just learned that Maj Dick Winters passed away last week. Maj Winters was a member of the 506th Parachute infantry, 101st Airborne Division who jumped on D-day and in Market Garden. He served at Bastonne, and helped liberate a concentration camp. He was featured in the television production of A Band Of Brothers. There is a tribute to him here. World War II is fast fading below the horizon of living memory. I thought some of you would like to know.

Sad, sad news. Dick Winters was an inspiration to all and a true leader of men. 'Band of Brothers' was a credit to its producers, and a story of hardship and heroism that I am sure captivated all who watched it. Dick Winters was played by Damian Lewis, and I am sure he will be gutted by this news, as I believe they formed a strong relationship during its research and making.
RIP Maj Dick Winters |

A brave and inspirational character and another sad loss from this slowly dwindling generation to which we owe such a debt of gratitude.

Some of you might like to read the potted biography of Major Winters that I just "stumbled across" on the web:
