Question Whatchamacallit

Bit of a daft question really but being a tad confused (more and more frequently these days ) I'd welcome any clarification where possible. I often see posts where members have substituted the word 'eBay' for such things as ‘everyone’s favourite online auction site', or 'e---' [insert derogatory term of choice], or some such other replacement.

I am not entirely sure why this is; please forgive my naivety. Could someone kindly explain the rationale behind this practice?

With thanks,

JT
