This mask came with a Lot of badges bought, unseen, at auction. Can anyone tell me what it was for?

First impressions are that it is a locally made item of waxed cloth and cotton wadding. The eye pieces appear to be yellow plastic of some sort.
Whilst it reminds me of the very first attempts at a gas mask I suspect it has a more mundane role- welding?

Thanks for looking, Stephen.

Thanks. Further info found courtesy of Joe Sweeney.

These are a pattern of Goggles introduced in August 1915 and were alternately known as "Spicer" or "French" Type. About 3 million were made by Messrs Jas. Spicer & Sons. Ltd of Red Lion Str in London. These were issued with the Gas Helmets and SBR's into 1917 for tear gas protection.
Stephen.

Joe Sweeney is greatly missed. He was 'the man' for knowledge on Great War British uniform and equipment. Regards, Paul.
