Default 8th KRIH Button Brooch.

A brooch mounted on original card marked "Actual Button As Worn By Officers". The button is by Gaunt. But was this pattern of button ever worn by the regiment ?

Hello

Your button is not the 'standard' uniform button for the 8th Royal Irish Hussars. As I am sure you know, that would be a crown over 'KRIH' over 'VIII'.

However, if your button is a small size it could be a cap or mess dress button. Is the central device mounted on a plain dome? These buttons were often of a different pattern to the larger uniform buttons and they are still a bit of a mystery because not much research appears to have been done on them.

On the other hand, it might be an officers' mess waiters' button. Again, these differed from the laid down 'regulation' pattern of button.

A nice little brooch whatever the button is!

Regards
Roger

Default Button broach

Roger,

I have seen these before ,my first thoughts were it was a uniform button . Not the case .
Gaunt produced a number of these sweetheart broaches to the cavalry regiments , I have an example to the 3rd & 7th Hussars see my cav button album . This is missing the laurels but the back is the same as your 8th and my 3rd Hussar example . Defiantly never worn as uniform button.
Also seen RM examples .

Regards

Tony c
