Default STOKES MELB. makers marked badge.

This badge will be up for sale at some time in the future please bear in mind when posting.
Hello chaps,
Picked this badge up this morning, I've trawled the previous posts on this badge for any leads, seems WW1 badges are marked STOKES whereas WW2 are marked STOKES AND SON MELBOURNE
This badge badge being Marked STOKES MELB. Is this badge WW1 or WW2?
Thanks Tony.

Hi Tony
as to dating a Stokes rising sun badge by Makers Mark - not sure if you can........ I do have three types made by Stokes.....
1. Stokes (marked to the right side of the rear)
2. Stokes & Sons Melb.
3. Stokes & Sons Melbourne
My no. 3 badge, I purchased off a guy that claimed it was his Grandads from WWI. (pork pies to make a sale or true ???????)
My no. 1 badge, last year I quizzed a military dealer in reference to dating by makers mark - He seemed to think it would indicate Stokes factory where it was made.......
My no. 3 badge has finer detail than my no.1 badge - I have been told that a fine detailed Australian made rising sun badge was manufactured pre WWI ????????
I am interested in other members thoughts and comments........
Regards
Gary

Hi Tony

I have a collection of 4 Rising Suns that came from a family member who served in WW1, they come with his medals etc.

There is a Stokes, a Tiptaft, one with a slider and no name and one with a large pin and not lugs, this one is un named.

The Stokes one is names Stokes & Sons Melb. This is the WW1 issue.

The WW2 stokes is named Stokes & Sons Melbourne.

Have another look and see if there is a small & Sons after the Stokes.

Jeff Cossum shows the Stokes & Sons Melbourne as being the WW2 isssue.

I hope that this helps.

Lets know how much you want for it.

Regards

Phil.

Hi Phil,

Do you know if the same dating applies to the collars as well? I have a cap version marked Stokes & sons Melbourne and a collar version which is marked Stokes & Sons Melb.

Thanks for your help.

G'day Jerry

I would expect that it would. I will have a look at my collars and check Cossum and get back to you soon.

regards

Phil.
