REAR-ADMIRAL PILE T.H.W. , CMM, CD

Another example of a modern Canadian uniform.



Rear-Admiral Tyrone Pile enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1975 as officer cadet and graduated from Royal Military College, Kingston with an Honours BA in English in 1979.

After graduating from Naval Officer Training Centre VENTURE in 1980, he served at sea in a number of Canadian warships. These include Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) TERRA NOVA as Bridge Watchkeeper, Shipborne Air Controller, Diving Officer and Deck Officer (1980-83) and then HMCS RESTIGOUCHE (1984-85) with similar duties, including Combat Information Officer. In 1983, Rear-Admiral Pile served briefly aboard Her Majesty's Yacht BRITANNIA. He returned to RESTIGOUCHE as Combat Officer in 1987 and subsequently served as Executive Officer HMCS PRESERVER (1993-95) and Commanding Officer HMCS REGINA (1995-97).

Rear-Admiral Pile participated in United Nations and NATO maritime interdiction operations: Haiti (UN) (1993), the Former Yugoslavia (NATO) (1994 and 1995), and the Northern Arabian Gulf (UN) (1997). As Commanding Officer HMCS REGINA, his was the first Canadian warship to fully integrate with a United States Navy Surface Action Group and Battle Group for operations in the Arabian Gulf.

Staff appointments included Flag Lieutenant to the Commander Maritime Forces Pacific, Staff Officer for Fleet Operations at National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ), Section Head for Navy Strategic and Business Planning (NDHQ), and Executive Secretary to the Chief of the Maritime Staff (NDHQ).

Rear-Admiral Pile is a graduate from Combat Control Officer Course 8602. From 1990 to 1992, he attended the University of Victoria where he completed a Master's Degree in History, and in 1993 graduated from the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto. On promotion to Captain(N) in 1999, he was appointed Director of NATO Policy at NDHQ where he served until assuming command of the 4th Maritime Operations Group in Victoria, BC (2000-2002). From October to December 2002, he attended the International Symposium Course in Beijing, China and then went on to attend the National Security Studies Course in Toronto from January to June 2003. After being promoted to Commodore in July 2003, he assumed Command of Canadian Fleet Atlantic until July 2005.

Promoted to Rear-Admiral in June 2005, he was appointed Chief of Staff Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources - Military) in Ottawa. On 11 May 2006, he became the Chief Military Personnel and Commander of Military Personnel Command and served in this position until July 2007. In 27 July of 2007, he assumed his present post in Victoria, BC, as Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, Joint Task Force (Pacific) and Joint Task Force Games (2010).

This picture needs updating to show the executive curl that was given back to the navy not long ago.

And he's a nice guy to boot! I work across the harbour and a group of JTF folk came over before the olympics. If I hadn't seen all the gold braid, I would have thought him just another long-serving member. I see now his background is quite impressive!

Now if the Canadian Navy outlawed the fairly new custom of wearing moustaches without beards, all would be right with the world.
