Sussex Yeo, 16th Btn, 230 Bde, 74th Yeo Div
Hi All
On my research travels I have come across a 74th Yeo Div insignia that was being sold as a "rare" Army Service Corps arm badge (74th Div). The ASC, being Divisional Troops, would have worn the black diamond (if anything) as that was the divisional badge. Having a look through the forum albums for anything Sussex Yeomanry related that might give a hint for the 16th (Sussex Yeo) Btn I came across this OCA badge ...... and the mystery was solved. It can only be.... Does anyone have any old photos of the 16th Battalion in Palestine? Did they wear a Flash on their Helmets (Blue/Yellow Square perhaps?) or their cap badge?

Hi Griff,
Just to say that over the years I've seen the black for HQ/Divisional Troops, the green for 231 brigade, the red and this one (I think one sold last year). As my interest is in Welsh WW1 units I have the green one to 231 Brigade. They're lovely badges. Best Jon |

Absolutely blinding stuff Griff - I do have some photos I believe of Glamorgan Yeomanry showing their formation signs in Palestine. Would you be interested in seeing them if I could dig them out?

Hi Griff - I found one that features in my book on Neath and Briton Ferry in the Great War. This came from the family of William J David, Glamorgan Yeomanry who is standing in the back row, third from the left. He was killed on 31st October 1917 and I had access to all his letters that I quote in the book.
If you can see the sun helmets with the man on the far left and the one in front it shows the formation sign with the digonal across and the light side on the rear of the helmet. Quite long and thin as opposed to square too... |

Its difficult to make out Jon without a higher resolution scan on that helmet?
What ever it is..... its a thin looped strip by the looks of it? ...... and not the square patch that I have been told they wore?

Hi Griff,
I hadn't seen this thread but I have PM'd you seperately based on your picture message. I have some photos that may be useful. That is absolutely stunning. If ever it needs a new home, please let me know! KR, Pete Last edited by Tiger Pete; 15-01-19 at 04:57 PM. |

It certainly looks like a thin looped strip Griff, yes. I’ll try to do a zoomed in version for you as I did the photo on a very high resolution initially.

Hi Pete.... there is no PM received? The Sussex diamond was for sale a couple of years ago by the looks..... the image was still up on the search engines though.... I took it at face value for ASC..... but as soon as I saw your album.... and also this book below.... I knew it was the Sussex Yeo Btn.

From what I can make out Pete.... its a large Blue/Yellow split diamond on the helmet (with no spur)?

Hi Griff,
Yes, I think so. The photos are from the book. No evidence of anything being worn on the arms or STs, or even a cap badge on the helmet in any photos. The embroidered badge is from the First World War role of honour at the Sx Yeo museum at Newhven Fort 2016. KR, Pete |

It exists .... so it must have been worn at some point? What i am doing is a guide more than "set in stone". I have the DHY wearing the shoulder patch in their best jacket..... but not on their field jacket for example.... so the helmet badge is the important one in the field by the looks of it. I have the DHY RSM wearing the shoulder patches at the end of the war in service dress.
