a few new badges looking for oppinions
hi all
just a few new badges looking for oppinions. my thinking is Chaplains is a relugged OSD Tank Corps is good Lancers is good QOH is good. is this Victorian period? Somerset 2VB is good The Kings is good the rest im not so sure thanks in advance BC

The 2 VB SLI looks ok to me as does the Victorian Hussars.
The chaplains has been badly repaired as stated. The Cheshire Yeomanry has been widely restruck and identical ones are also found with the Gaunt BHam mark. I have my doubts about the 2nd Northants and the 24th Lancers as both have been widely restruck using original dies I believe. I alwys prefer a slidered version of both these badges. The lugged Kings appears to be correct. The 17/21sr could well be ok but dating it is difficult as the regiment often bought metal ones right up to QRL days and beyond. From the photographs, I do particularly like the 7th Hussars and the 17th Lancers, expensive things these days.

17th Lancers
I've been looking to expand my tiny 17th Lancers collection and have read lots of threads on the forum going back to 2007 to gain as much knowledge as I can to try to avoid buying any copies/restrikes etc. This is an ongoing process as I am compiling a document to try to draw all the various threads/theories together first. The thing that worries me is that there are mottos still being made & deliberately 'antiqued' as it states in the ad. This is not to say the manufacturers are out to con anyone as they clearly state on their homepage '...FINE QUALITY REPLICA HISTORICAL AWARDS & INSIGNIA...'. Luckily I had already read the 2011 thread about the 'rubbish in the left eye socket' (Lancer17 - R.I.P) so would know to avoid this one, but if I had not read that thread I might well have bought one if offered. The firm (who I had never come across before this week) was established in 1975 according to their ad, and their badges '...are die struck in Brass or Nickel often using original WW1 or WW2 period dies'. If you search their site you can see they produce numerous regimental badges, and if they've been in production since 1975 god only knows how many of their copies are out there unwittingly being passed off as genuine!

The Motto is unfortunately one of the most popular badges, as virtually anything with skulls are these days, so is very widely faked.
Having been worn in the same form as it has for well over a century, fakes or restrikes can sometimes be difficult to determine. I seem to recall reading that at sometime privately made or even what we call fakes (or something to that effect) may have made their way into wear by the regiment in more modern times, so I just don't know. CB I might add that the earlier established pattern issue badges by Firmin and Gaunt are well known, but there are silver or silvered badges that were private purchase by officers, and no doubt some enlisted men obtained them, that exist as well.

CB, many thanks for the input.
A lot of the ones I see for sale look to be in remarkably good condition, as if they were only made yesterday (cough!) and do seem really expensive. I think I'm going to concentrate on the rough/worn/cheap end of the market! Leo

Winking eye motto?
BTW, can anyone tell me what the 'winking eye' motto refers to that I've seen mentioned in some of the older threads? It obviously denotes a duffer, but unfortunately the links to the old ebay listings obviously no longer work. Is this the same thing as the 'dirt in the eye' motto? Can anyone provide a picture?

Here is a winking eye motto. It’s the old Firmin die. Also visible is the flaw around the crown on the skull sometimes mentioned.
The degree of ‘wink’ i.e. size of the flaw in the deepest part of the eye socket varies quite drastically.
