Bi-metal dragon/circlet/coronet/cross formée
Hi All,
Could anyone help me identify this unit? I think it's a dragon (unless it's a wyvern or some sea monster) in a circlet surmounted by a coronet superimposed on a cross formée. Circlet and coronet in g/m, rest in w/m. I'm not great after 1918, I'm afraid! Thanks, Tom Last edited by TomPC; 03-10-21 at 12:56 AM. |

Cap or collar badge (depending on whether fitted with slider or lug) of Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire).
Looks like it's an Other Ranks anodised aluminium one. |

The beast is the Berkshire Regiment's Chinese dragon. I always found the DERR's cap badge one of the least inspiring cap badges. When the Brigade system broke up in 1968 the regiment (like some other regiments who had been amalgamated since 1958 and did not have a pre 1958 badge to revert to) initially used their collar badge as a cap badge. Unlike the other regiments, the DERR decoded to keep the collar design and wore it on the red inverted triangle from their Berkshire's heritage.

The RGBW Regt / LI badge was hardly an improvement on that of the DERR.
The King's Regiment kept their collar dog design from the Brigade days as cap badge too, it always struck me as a pity that regiments such as DERR, King's and RRF used the same design for their respective regiment's caps and collars instead of taking the opportunity to display more of their component regiments history. |
