Sherwood Foresters Victorian button.
I picked up this Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) button this morning and was surprised to see that it was made in Calcutta. Does anyone know when the Sherwood Foresters were stationed in India? I imagine that the 1st and 2nd Battalions would have spent several periods in India during Queen Victoria's reign. Does anyone know when Harman and Co were making buttons?

I doubt they made buttons, as they were shown as tailors, in the two directories in which I noted them. The few Harman backmarked buttons I have seen appeared likely to have been UK-made.
Street’s Indian and Colonial Mercantile Directory for 1870 listed them as tailors & outfitters & glovers, 11 Government Place, Calcutta and as hatters, 12 Government Place, Calcutta. Thacker’s Indian Directory 1895 recorded them as civil & military tailors, hatters, hosiers & shirtmakers, 12 Government Place East, Calcutta; 18 Merchant Street, Rangoon; and 37 Walbrook, London EC. Rex,
superb, thank you. Just the kind of information that I was looking for. The buttons were probably ordered via Harman and Co sometime after 1881 during a posting to India. |

A pleasure, High Wood.
I like these Days-of-the-Raj backmarks. Rex |

Not Notts
High Wood,
At the risk of sounding pedantic, the button being QVC is Derbyshire Regiment. Other than that I can add nothing. Cheers Tony.

Thank you for the clarification. According to my reference books the 45th (Nottinghamshire Regiment) Sherwood Foresters existed between 1866 and 1881.
