Everyday working dress but it was just evolution, RFC as part of the Army heading towards being a Service in it's own right.

One thing to consider is that on formation in 1912 the RFC consisted of a Miltary Wing and a Naval Wing and it was only later that the latter became officiallythe RNAS. With that in mind it is quite onceivable that your relative referred to the RFC even if he was in the naval part of aviation.
