Well, I certainly have not done any "scratching" whatsoever, it is very clear that badges with long sliders have been in existence from the introduction of the slider.

Yes, that's obvious. We know that sliders were shortened in 1906 and we know why ! Now, lets try and analyse why they were lengthened at later periods !
A new King's cap badge appeared as Pattern 10042/1926. There are three basic types (shown here chronologically) Types 2 and 3 very very rarely have long sliders. Type 3 - which I date to the war years (and / or just before) on account of their ubiquity - appear to have quite a number with short and quite a number with long sliders. I wonder if I am wrong in placing the long ones first ?? What date was the side cap (re) introduced ??? - ie is that the reason they have long sliders ?? The photographs are obvious so I won't bore you with actual dimensions this time. Here are some badges from Pattern Last edited by KLR; 10-04-16 at 05:41 PM. |

Side caps came back with the introduction of battledress circa 1938 and the removal of the old peaked cap, long tunic and puttees. |

Thanks Alan, this suggests that the first 1926 batch was with the shorter sliders and that the long ones are later.

Here's the only one I have, it's to the 4th VB Cheshire Regiment the slider is 44mm long with 15mm past the bottom of the badge, c 1903-08.

Come on now, Wilf... you can't post a tantalising image of a long-slidered badge and not allow us a view of the slider itself!

Its not really a long one, hes cut it in half and lowered the bottom part down, the badge hides the gap
