Durham Light Infantry Shoulder Title
Hi All,
I've just picked this up, can anyone tell me anything about it? I believe from reading Westlake's the DLI title was used from 1920 but does it fit with the rest of it? Thanks very much, Michael |

9th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry (TF), 1908-1920?

Thanks a lot, I think that was my concern.
Are the individual parts ok? Could I make a different title up if I get the right bits. Michael |

Sorry, my specialty is lineages (see my signature below. Thus I can not tell anything about the quality of the shoulder title. I assume others will join here to do that.
But there were the 5th - 9th (TF) Battalions in the DLI. Thus I assume that you can replace the T9 part with others when you can find them, Maybe not for the 6th that used a blackened cap badge and thus probably had also blackened shoulder titles.

I think its part HLI and part DLI.
Replace the DLI with a HLI and it should be correct. regards

That would then be 9th (Glasgow Highland) Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry (TF)?

Brilliant, thanks for the help everyone.
I bought it cheap without knowing about battalion numbers etc. Good to know I can salvage something from it. Michael |

Hi All,
I went back to the shop and couldn't find an HLI title but did manage to find a Durham one. Would this be correct now or am I still wrong? Thanks a lot, Michael |

That is correct for the 9th, ca 1908-20/33. It's unclear to me if they continued to wear it while the War Office fretted over TA distinctions in the early 1920s.
Ironically, the first version you had (T/9/DLI) was also correct, being adopted in 1934 and used until cloth titles took their place. |

Thanks very much for that, I did think the original was right for the later time period so I have kept the DLI title as well and just picked up the extra Durham one so I can have the earlier WW1 version as well.
Thanks again, Michael |

By sheer unbelievable coincidence, a copy of The Gateshead Gurkhas: A History of 9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry 1859-1967 landed on my doorstep this afternoon. No dedicated secction on badges and insignia, but if the narrative or photos turn up anything of interest I shall report immediately.

Wow, thank you very much.
I've never heard of Gateshead Gurkha's, I chose this title purely based on it being a local unit and a good price. I'll have to do some research myself now. Thanks a lot, Michael |
