Who are these guys?
Firstly, please accept my almost total ignorance of military matters.
I have found the attached photograph amongst some old family papers and I know nothing about it whatsoever. Of course there is nothing written on the back! I wondered if anyone could shed any light on this group by looking at their uniforms, cap badges, etc - sorry it's not any clearer. The only clue is that the photograph may well have been taken in Scarborough, Yorkshire, but the cap badges don't look like the Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment). Also, any ideas about the ghostly-white chap sitting cross-legged on the pavement? I thought at first he was somehow photo-shopped into the group, but the guys on the front row seem to have positioned their legs to accommodate him. If anyone could give me the slightest clue whatsoever, I'd be very grateful. Thank you. |

I'm not sure re. cap badge, possibly Middlesex Regiment but there are number of possibilities given the quality of the image - any chance of a better quality crop of cap badges?
I think the man sitting on the ground is a cook. |

A fairly smart group of NCOs, mostly Lance Corporals with a Corporal and Sergeant. They are wearing their ‘best’ forage caps not SD caps. No arm bands but could they be Garrison or Military Police?

From the shape of the cap badge and the presence on several men of whistle chains I'd go for Military Police.
The seated figure at the front is clearly a cook. Jon |

I'd agree, I'd say from the whistles and the shiny peak on the forage caps they look like Military Police to me.

Really appreciate your thoughts so far.
I've tried to scan the photo at maximum resolution to see if the cap badge will become clearer, but it's not a great success. Take a look. And thanks again. |

The man standing far left appears to be wearing the ribbons of the QSAM and the KSAM. The two men seated second and third from the right are wearing wound stripes which dates the photo to post-1916.

Military Police with the EVII cap badge which was apparently commonly worn in WW1.

Hi Derek,
Just so you can see what we are thinking this is the WW1 era military police cap badge: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ctureid=189410 and this is the earlier EVII version that Alan referred to: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ctureid=189409 Michael |

A sincere thank you
Well, gentlemen, what can I say? I am so impressed by your knowledge and indeed by your almost-superhuman eye for details!
Thank you most sincerely for all the information you have given. (Now it's back to me, to find out why this photo was amongst some family stuff and which if any of these fine men was a relative of mine! But at least I now have some facts on which to base my research!) I really really appreciate your help. Derek Megginson, Scarborough. |
