Default British Colonel - Airborne dress

Dear all,

I have received this tunic, unfortunately without any label (name or tailor).

I would like to know if this coat could be approximately dated ?

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards,

AATTV

The rank badges are for a full colonel with the correct staff officer buttons on red Gorget collar tabs. However, the jacket buttons are Parachute Regiment but should also be Staff buttons. Officers of the Parachute Regiment wore a darker shade of Service Dress. The lanyard, while in airborne colours, is one I have not seen before despite having a large collection of 200+ lanyards.

So I am a little suspicious, but that said it could have belonged to a Territorial Army officer or someone not too concerned by dress regulations.

Dear Tim,

A huge thank for your opinion about this bizarre jacket.

I will try to investigate deeper.

Best regards,

Maybe the owner was the Parachute Regiments "Regimental Colonel".

Marc,
Regimental Colonels should wear collar badges and not red staff Gorgets. Also the darker pattern of Service Dress?

Possibly an ACF County Commandant ? (ACF pin on titles removed ??), assume medal ribbons have been removed (otherwise unusual to reach the rank of Colonel with no medals )

The lanyard has been identified as one for the post war 10th Battalion Parachute Regiment (TA) in the 1950s, but their lanyard was definitely two cords tightly intertwined (maroon and black) into one cord by the 1980s (photo attached), rather than the more elaborate plaited style on this uniform, which may have been an earlier (officer’s?) issue (I don’t know).

This might match a TA PARA officer promoted to the General Staff but not bothering to change his buttons (proud of them and his Bn lanyard)

(I once saw a TA PARA full colonel wear his staff badge on a 15 PARA tartan badge backing on his maroon beret and with a 10 PARA DZ flash on his smock, long after both units had been disbanded!)

The style of the service dress seems more modern than the 1950s, as do the wings - c1970/80s?

Tim, The three I worked with did not wear collar badges, and I am fairly sure the current RA Regtl Col is the same.

Paul, You can just see marks from some medal ribbons.

Marc,
Perhaps I am confusing the appointments of Colonel-in-Chief, Colonel Commandant and Regimental Colonel? While the first two are honourary appointments to more senior or retired officers, Regimental Colonel is presumably a serving officer appointment.

AATTV - It looks like a well made item, have you looked in the inside pocket for a sewn in tailor's label which usually shows who the jacket was made for?

Dear all,

I am sorry for having launch such a debate.

I have well checked into the pocket, and unfortunately, no label inside. The medals have been removed obviously.

Thank you very much all for your comments about this piece.

NB : the size is huge and large… Probably not an operational officer.

Best regards,

AATTV

The tunic is not Para regt as it is the wrong colour so I suspect it may have been added to in order to make it more appealing.

The red tabs are offset and one of the pips is on the wrong way around. It just looks wrong.
