3rd (Militia) Battalion DLI - Cap Badge
I have been told that this Battalion wore the DLI Cap Badge with a small numeral '3' on it.
Have I been informed correctly? If I have would some one be able to provide me with a photo' of one? Thanks Dave |

If we are talking about 1889-1908 onwards then that is very unlikely as I can't think of single the Militia Bn of that era with a numeral in their badges.
The few that did wear different badges tended to have different metals but the majority seem to have worn regular badges. Unfortunately militia cap badges are not well documented. The pre 1908 Volunteer Bns certainly had Vb in the bugles but not the militia to my knowledge. Last edited by Alan O; 17-09-15 at 06:35 PM. Reason: Correct typo in date. |

Thanks for your response. I believe that I have been misinformed as I have found in Ray Westlake's Collecting Metal Shoulder Titles that the Battalion had a numeral '3' in the cords of the bugle in their shoulder title.

Dave
you asked about the cap badge not the s/t. The s/ts often had the numerals. Alan |

Quite Alan hence my mention of being misinformed when I mentioned the s/t.
Thanks for your interest. Dave |

Hi Dave,
Some of the VB battalions of the DLI wore pouch and band badges that had the numeral for the Battalion within the bugle strings as Alan has noted for the cap badge. As you have noted there is indeed a distinctive pattern shoulder title badge for the 3rd Militia battalion. I may have some additional information at home on the pattern of the militia buttons and cap badge but it is a slim hope sorry. Cheers Dean |

Not mentioned in Westlake, but shown in an article in the Regimental magazine in the 1930`s,( the Kings Liverpool`s had two "Militia" battalions, the 3rd and 4th ) is a small brass figure "4" which it says was worn by the militia battalion.
I have always presumed, but have no evidence, that the 3rd battalion would have worn a figure "3". If anyone can confirm the wearing of a figure 3 by the 3rd Kings I would be pleased to hear. P.B.
