Default Australian buttons

Evening Gents,
I picked up a few Australian (and NZ) buttons tonight & would appreciate some info on some of them from our friends down under, the QVC one is made by Bowley & co Melbourne & I don't know what this one is, who would have worn the Duperite one? Thankyou for any info lads, best wishes,
Wilf.

The Staff Corps ones were probably worn during the 1920s through to the early 1940s.

The QVC button looks like one of the Victorian Military Forces buttons of about 1893/1901. Your button looks a bit oval shaped. I don't know the significance of that........or is it just the photo.

Thanks Donny,
The button is round, just leaning to one side mate, I have a w/m one of these too which I thought may be Chaplains buttons due to the motto but I'm only guessing here?? I have added a pic of a QVC Queensland button too, any ideas if this is military? Thanks again in advance,
Wilf.

G'day.

The Queensland button seems to match that of the Queensland Defence Forces, 1885-1901.

Those Victorian Military Forces buttons apparantly came gilt, brass, whitemetal and oxidised......earlier VMF buttons look the same but have the motto "Aut Pace Aut Bello".

The brown plastic button is a clothing button used up to about 1970 and the button with the anchor is pre 1953 Royal Australian Navy

Default Duperite Buttons

These brown buttons were fairly common on Cadet Great Coats in the 1970's in Sydney, Australia. Perhaps a generalisation but ... Since we were eating old army rations from the early fifties in those days - they probably were worn by Australian diggers abound that time as we'll.
Duperite buttons were probably phased out when Staybright buttons were introduced in the sixties and most of this old kit forwarded to Cadet Units.
In the early 1980's we were banned from wearing Great Coats.
Regards Campbell

Just back from visiting the Australian Army Infantry Museum at Singleton in the Hunter Valley NSW Australia. These buttons were definitely worn in WW2 on Great Coats and Jerkins. They were described as being made from Phenolic.

Hi Wilf,
The New Zealand Forces button dates from 1911 and was worn by infantry and mounted rifles units in WW1 and by 2NZEF troops in WW2.
Cheers, Tinto
