' R '
Hello gentlemen,
Can anyone explain the significance of the letter ' R ' stamped on the back of this badge please ? My own theory and probably wrong, is that it indicates a properly manufactured reproduction, as opposed to the fraudsters who knock out loads of copies with the intention of passing them off as genuine !! Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated. Dave. Sorry everyone, I'm so used to asking questions re British badges, this one went there too, I guess it should have gone to our friends across the pond in Canada, sorry Mike !!!! Hello Dave, contrary to what you tend to believe, no one on this side has started copying this badge and, marking them as such. What I would believe is the "R" is a maker's mark of some kind. The Ottawa Cameron badge is not a rare badge and is easily available in militaria or badges shows.
Hopefully, someone from this side will come up with an explanation. Jo

I believe the R stands as a makers mark for Roden. It's a good sign... not a bad one.

Hello Jo,
Thanks for the fast response, I must admit that Maker's marks did not occur to me, perhaps you're right, all the best. Dave. PS writing this as Jim posted, so thanks to Jim too, promising......... DC. |

The guys have it right...Roden Bros. Nice to find an "R" on badges...no so much on medals!
Incidentally, I am not sure how many other types of badges Roden produced using that particular mark. However, I can tell you they produced Black Watch (RHR) of Canada 1939-pattern O/R badges about mid-WWII and they are maked in the same way. I would assume your badge was likely also a WWII production. I have the same badge as you and it's a nice striking. Adam |

Definitely concur with everyone that 'R' stands for RODEN Bros.
I have a COTC University of Western Cap Badge which is makers marked with a 'R'. Interesting thing about this cap badge is that it is not referenced in Chris Booker's book on COTC badges. Best, Mike

' R '
Just a quick thanks to the other guys who endorsed the reason for the ' R ' on this badge, every-one's input is greatly appreciated.
Dave.

BTW, Roden Bros was taken over by Birks in the late '50s.
