Backmark Help..?
Hi Chaps,
Can someone help me out with the full details of this backmark? Some of the details are worn but I'm sure someone is familiar with this maker. Cheers, Roy.

Roy.
All I can add is that I have a button (Royal Anglesea Local Militia) by the same maker that was worn around 1810, sure the button boys can give you more info. The address is St Martins Lane, London Jonathan |

Hi Roy and Jonathan,
I am afraid that I not an expert on backmarks. We need one of the real Button experts to join us for that - Roger and David are you out there? I use this website as a general guide though I think it contains the odd mistake or three: http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/button-makers.html#anchora It shows R . BUSHBY . St MARTINS LANE . As being in use circa 1806 - 1824. All the best Ian |

Hello Roy
Both Jonathan and Ian have the full info, 'R Bushby St Martins Lane'. All I have for that backmark is early 1800s which would appear to be consistent with the style of your button - open back. Another backmark that does not come up all that often. Whether button maker or tailor/outfitter I do not know. Roger |

Good morning Gents,
That's it .. I can see it clearly now. When I posted yesterday I was in the middle of cooking a big meal and along with the requisite glass to two or red wine, that 'may' have impeded any logical thinking... Lovely to know this is a nice early and scarce mark, always a bonus. As the light gets better in an hour or two, I will have to sort out some photos of this lovely button. I strayed a little from my Militia focus, just couldn't resist - so this one is Irish Infantry. Jonathan, your Anglesea button sounds interesting, have we see that one? If not a photo would be grand? Cheers, Roy.

Thanks Jonathan,
Look forward to it. As it's just tucked away, you really probably don't want it anyway... Good luck at the fair, all my collecting is internet these days being stuck out in the middle of this high desert but hey I'm not complaining. But do miss trawling around the English fairs and antique shops. Cheerio, Roy.

Hi Gents,
So here is some images showing the front of this button - 2nd Royal Tyrone. As mentioned this is an unintentional straying from my main Militia focus but hey what's a chap to do - it's a beauty, condition is great and it's early - that makes it just about crack cocaine for button collectors (well me at least ). Cheers, Roy.

Hello Roy
When you're addicted you don't stray, even unintentionally! Your button is for the Royal Tyrone Militia, precedence number '2' between 1793 and 1833. From the open back I would think yours dates towards the beginning of that period. So another very early Irish Militia button for your collection! See, you just can't help yourself can you? Roger |
