Officers Silver? Guards Machine Gun Battalion
Hi am looking to see images of the above badge, Dimensions would really help as well, I will be photographing a latest addition buy! this is returnable if I can sort out my feelings regards authenticity!
It is unhallmarked, passes the white paper test, lovely fretting, but there is always a BUT! Dimensions :- Height :- 1.855" (47.12) Width :- 1.9865" (50.45) Thickness :- 0.228 (5.81) Material :- Ungallmarked Silver Disc Dimensions :- Diameter :- 0.935 (23.76) Thickness :- 0.052 (1.32) Material :- Brass disc front is painted centre Red & Outer Ring Blue Have taken picture's with natural light (not much this early in the morning) and Flash, (not keen using this) each has its own merits the natural light shows paint!!! Flash not so much, but you can see the badge gave been onto google found the one in the Saleroom, thanjs Andy, also Les Martins badge, these all look as mine do, though position of spigots to hold rear disc different and mine does not have Hallmarks? I would imagine not all did but look forward to your thoughts on this badge forvthe good points and the bad points! Is it a keeper? Many thanks in advance Billy Last edited by billy; 16-10-20 at 06:54 AM. Reason: add information |

I would absolutely not bother with it, if I was looking to buy an example I would certainly buy a standard Jennens made piece with a full set of sixth cycle Birmingham hallmarks for 1916-17.

I agree with Frank.
Here is a very grimy J&Co badge: https://www.regimentalbadges.com/en-...3#.X4ldySXTWaM |

So what are your thoughts on Lot 163 C&T auction. It has the gaunt maker mark.
Lot 164 is a J&Co but that one will be out of my price range at present. Especially as I got a little carried away at recent Bosleys auction. |

It appears to be the smaller variant seen here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...7&d=1567163355 v’s https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...99&postcount=1 as in lot 164.

I don’t collect officers badges so am not best placed to comment, however when it comes to higher end fakery I always checkout Wharton Militaria.
Many of their repro pagri, NCO and officer’s badges have been given a bit more attention to detail with respect to the finish, fixings, voiding and fretwork. As you can see they have a ‘nice’ well made unmarked silvered GMGB http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...s&item=BBG0109 . Would I buy it? No. The backplate looks like it was made yesterday. This is the level of their Officer quality fakes and whilst the die used is Martin Marsh the finish shows the ends that they can and do go to: http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...&item=BBAC0002 http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...&item=BBAC0031 http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...&item=BBAC0032 http://www.whartonmilitaria.co.uk/de...&item=BBAC0013 With regards to your badge personally I do not like the enamel work it looks very matt in the picture and not the quality I’d expect. Of course this could be a repair or replacement. |
