Royal Northumberland Fusiliers as RA and Reconnaissance Corps
Hello.
I've a badge question for the above, I hope someone can help. The 6th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers became RTR in WW2, wore the RTR cap badge and had the distinguishing epaulet slides of cherry red and gosling green. My question is, 1)A battalion, 5th I think, became a Royal Artillery search light Regiment, did they continue to wear the RNF cap badge, or did they wear the RA badge. 2)Were RA cloth titles worn? 3)Were there any other distinguishing badges worn by this unit? A Battalion, or was it two Battalions (?), Became part of the Reconnaissance Corps, 1) Were Rec Corps badges worn, or RNF badges worn? 2)Were Rec Corps shoulder titles worn, or RAC ones? 3)Were there any other distinguishing badges worn by this/these units? Many thanks in advance for your time and help. Cheers Chris |

A link to wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5th_Ba...land_Fusiliers
They were allowed to keep the Cap Badge, but, all other badges were to be RA., that is if they kept to the rules. Marc

Quote:
The book shows a photo of a Churchill crew of 43rd (Northumberland) Bn RTR in 1942, wearing the RTR cap badge. 8th Bn RNF formed 3rd Recce Regiment. 4th Bn RNF formed 50th Recce Bn (destroyed before cavalry terms were to be adopted). According to CN Barclay the change of name from 8th Bn RNF to 3rd Recce Regt (NF) "was accompanied by efforts, from outside, to sever the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers connection, and in particular to prevent the wearing of the Regimental cap badge. These attempts were most strenuously resisted and, although a year or so later the 'battle of the cap badge was lost, the unit continued to wear Royal NorthumberlandFusiliers shoulder titles until its disbandment after the war". A photo in the book shows Lt Col HH Merriman, CO of 3rd Recce Regt, wearing "Reconnaissance" cloth shoulder titles, above 3rd Div sign, arm of service strip and "V". "The British Reconnaisance Corps in World War II" by R Doherty and R Chapman shows a colour plate of a Trooper of the Assault Troop of 3rd Recce Regt in France in summer 1944, wearing the 3rd Div sign and arm of service strip and with the corps cloth shoulder title removed from his BD sleeve. You're a star Leigh, cheers mate.
So after the badge battle was lost, Reconnaissance Corps cap badge and RNF cloth shoulder titles worn, is that correct? Cheers Chris |

That's how I read it.
4th Bn were reformed after destruction in North Africa but not as a Recce unit. |
