Default Hampshire Volunteer Battalion Cap Badge

Hi Gents,

Opinions on this one please,

Hampshire 1st-4th Volunteer Battalion cap badge in white metal with a clipped slider and three sweat holes one behind the slider, with a nice crisp strike. I am looking to pass this badge on if it is good, as I do not collect volunteer cap badges.

Picked this up a few years ago at Wimborne market.

Thanks,

Colin.

You appear to have a chromed badge which underneath will be the standard BM Hants badge.

It’s genuine but nothing to do with a V.B.

Hi Luke,

Does not seem to be heavenly chromed, is it a standard badge due to it being two parts brazed together, so volunteer battalion in white metal one strike.

Was this worn by the band or NCOs

Many thanks,

Colin.

Cloin,

The camera plays tricks with metal colours so can you tell me if the 'crimped' slider (not clipped) is brass or is silver like the badge?

regards

Luke is correct, it’s not a VB badge as all the various Hampshire’s were distictive and unique. The WW1 VTC did wear an all whitemetal version but it was a single stamping with no overlay.

As Keith says the V.B.’s wore unique badges, some were the basic Cat & Cabbage design but had additional scrolls with their battalion title.

The 1st was in GM with the extra scroll at the bottom of the badge. I’ve seen a 2nd with the V.B. scroll above the ‘Hampshire’ one. None of these have overlaid Hampshire scrolls.

Others - 3rd and 4th - if memory serves, were totally different designs, former being similar to the later TF 6th Bn in design but a longer scroll to accommodate the battalion title and latter a star surmounted by a QVC.

That’s correct Luke. Then the 4th wore the dog gague and 5th were Isle of Wight with Carisbrooke Castle featured.

Nice badges Keith.

I’d actually forgotten the larger dog gague one. When I posted I had the one in the link in mind, which does have a small dog gague centre:

Is the small one an fsc I presume?

Possibly but I seem to remember them being described as a shako badge, I can’t remember where though. I do have them same badge but as a Rifle Vols as well as the VB one.

The WW1 Hampshire VTC badge, clearly a one piece strike.

I would agree. It's not a volunteer badge but a standard one that has been plated.

Rather superfluous after all above, but nevertheless on this page all the designs are to be seen here in a neat row:
Hampshire - Isle of Wight

Edit: repaired the link!

I’m happy to send you photos of the later pattern 4th VB and 5th IOW to add to it.

I will be happy to receive them. There is clearly a gap there for the IOW.
And I never was sure if the one that is there for the 4th is a cap badge (which I prefer) or a HP.;

I will send you a PM with mu e-mail address.
