Can anyone tell me if 6012604 relates to the Essex Regiment please and if so any information on the number?

I've been looking at the same item and in my opinion, it is a genuine Essex number, but certainly not WW1 era.

Numbers in the 6000s were serving in WW2, but at the moment I 'm not sure when that numbering began.

I believe the badge is an "early" issue, due to the construction, and possibly issued from old stock, but wishful thinking would like to believe it was possibly handed down from father to son, who had his number stamped onto it.

If I discover more, I'll let you know.

AO388 of 1920 allocated the Essex Regiment with a block of numbers from 5998001 to 6076000, so the answer would be yes.

A quick check on the CWGC website shows :

Private Ernest Walker 6012600 1st Bn. Essex Regiment died in August 1940 aged 21.

That would suggest your number is probably from 1939/40.

Certainly an original cap badge, I suppose I am being rather being cynical, I hardly ever encountered sliders stamped with numbers when I collected badges, but, these days they do seem to be appearing far more regularly.

Thanks for the information everyone.

The font of the numerals and commensurate age to them and the slider looked quite pleasing to my eyes. An unusual occurrence when period as a great many are no doubt added latterly by the unscrupulous.

My gut tells me this one is fine.

As far as I'm concerned, it is a good badge and the reason I stated that I thought it was an early issue, is that I have the same pattern on lugs.

Although not conclusive, it offers that possibility, but may also be that the same die remained in use for a good number of years.

Incidentally, I am trying to sort out different dies and manufacturers of Essex badges and this particular badge I have labelled as 10 9 11 (1), the numbers signifying the courses of bricks in the left block, central tower and main block.

So far I have identified another 10 9 11, which has slight differences to (1), that are not die faults or worn die strikes.
