Default Gloucestershire Regiment HMSS pagri gem

Hi all,

The latest addition to my collection - referred to as the Forage Cap Badge without the Gloucestershire title scroll. Worn by both OR’s in WM and Officer's in silver on the Forage Cap, Side Cap and as a Pagri badge.

This is the Officer's silver version made by Bent & Parker and hallmarked 1887-8 Birmingham. It was originally broached east-west but a replacement broach fitting north-south was applied, broken at the south clasp end.

The first Sphinx with a rear facing tail (as per this pagri badge) did not appear on collar badges until 1882 (Churchill 701).

This badges was apparently worn by the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment whilst on service in Malta c.1893 - 95 & Alexandria, Egypt, 1895 - 97 and then Calcutta and Allahabad, India 1897-99.

The 2nd Battalion was in India in 1881 when it merged with the 1st battalion. It remained there until 1893 when it spent a year in Aden, before arriving back in Britain in 1894. The Malta posting was the first post-merger overseas posting of the 1st Battalion in 1893.

This badge was made and in use seven or so years before I had expected the standard looped, WM version with Gloucestershire scroll to be in use from 1894.

I am aware of another silver badge that is also hallmarked for 1887-8, however, the maker is H & S could this be Hicks & Sons?

I am also aware of two OR's WM badges, one lugged & one pinned, that are all struck from the same die as you can see the flaw on the T on them the same as my Officer's badge. The flaw is also evident on two of the OR's WM badges both looped (one rear view shows brass loops) that have been posted on the Forum. These were both described as an early Gloucestershire Regiment badge for the Foreign Service Helmet which is correct.

I am indebted to a non-Forum member for helping me identify this badge correctly.

Happy New year to all, Dean.

Thanks Jeff,

I am very pleased to have it and have learnt a little of the badges of a regiment I didn't know that much about. All good research and learning.

Cheers and all the best for 2017, Dean
