Sussex Yeo, 16th Btn, 230 Bde, 74th Yeo Div

Here is a photo of members of the 12th ( West Somerset Yeomanry) Btn, Somerset Light Infantry with the 230th Field Ambulance, 74th Yeo Div.... looks like they are in France? Note the Forage caps of the Yeoman and the SLI (wearing their own cap badges). Shoulder patches clearly seen on the 12th Btn lads.

*** Unusual "coloured" photo (not by me) as the 12th Btn are not recorded as being in the 230th Bde and the 230 Field Ambulance stayed with the Brigade..... so it could be that its the 229th Field Ambulance (Blue spur) ..... and the photo has been misidentified.

Are you sure that the Glam Yeo wore green backing broken spur as one that the oldman was given was on black, the sun helmet tri colour badge also came in square/rectangle form.

The Black/Spur = Divisional Troops..... each Brigade had its own colour. Blue = 229, Red = 230 and Green = 231..... but it might be that the attached Brigade Arty/Mortars/Ambulance wore those colours as the "Teeth Arm" Regiments within the Brigades had their own ID mostly.

So... as in the case of the 230th Field Ambulance = Red/Spur ID, RAMC Cap badge in the Forage Cap and Corps Flash on the Helmet. But the

This is a chap from the 10th (Shropshire and Cheshire Yeomanry) Btn, King's Shropshire light Infantry (231 Bde) .... Tpr. Joseph Egerton. Any ideas on the colours of the Pagri Flash? Just a guess..... Green with red stripe?

Just found the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Btn, The Suffolk Regiment. :-

"since their time in Palestine, the 15th Battalion had been a part of the 74th (Dismounted Yeomanry) Division who wore as their insignia on the right sleeve, a broken spur in affectionate remembrance of their mounted past. On the other sleeve, the Battalion wore a diamond shaped patch of Regimental Colours of red and bottle green."

So the left arm has a split diamond with the Suffolk yeomanry colors of red and bottle green and the right has the red broken spur of the 230th Brigade. No mention of a pagri flash.

Thanks Stephen Looks like both the arm badges there ... good catch on the images So ...we can assume that nothing was on the helmet as there is no mention of it.

Here is another type of red broken spur..... cut off a khaki uniform (not Egypt/Palestine) . So this looks like a later made patch for Europe.

I have always presumed (dangerous) that as the 74th were sent to France soon after they were dismounted that they wore no sun helmets, reverting to tin helmets etc. If sun helmets had been worn interim I imagine that the existing badges were retained, or they were all removed.

KORR Norfolk Yeomanry wore their own 'pagri badge' not a Brigade one. See attached. Once dismounted they wore it as a sleeve badge.

Norfolk Yeo in Egypt (early) with Forage Cap...... Norfolk Yeo with Wolsey helmet. Once back in Europe the helmet patches transferred onto the shoulders in the logical sequence of events?

16th (Royal 1st Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Btn, Devonshire Regiment.

12th (Ayrshire and Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Btn, Royal Scots Fusiliers

10th (Shropshire and Cheshire Yeomanry) Btn, King's Shropshire light Infantry

In general:-
We know that all the yeomanry regiments went to Egypt with their own Cap badges. When Allenby arrived they were reorganized and started to wear their Brigade identity insignia.... BUT.... they still wore their own Forage Caps. Sponsor regular infantry regiments provided reinforcement and were badged regular in forage caps. So you will see Yeoman and regulars wearing their own insignia in some photos. The Wolsey Helmet and brigade insignia unified them all.

There appears to be three colours in the pagri badge.... it fits the Shropshire yeomanry colours (being the senior yeomanry to the Cheshire)?
