The hat pugaree is interesting - the thing is though I only thought they wore a beret with the 1st Armoured Car Regiment badge?

I don't ever recall seeing pictures of them wearing slouch hats.

The puggaree was blue to differentiate it from the Light Horse. Both used the single maroon pleat. According to the 1935 Dress Regs
The hat was the ceremonial headdress, but the beret seems to have been worn the most.
