Scots Greys Officer’s with weird modification
Greetings all,
Offered for input is this Scots Greys officers. Evidence of horizontal lugs but was modified at some time with a single lug and a small blade behind the scroll. There appears to have been a marking of some sort on the reverse, just above the WATERLOO plinth and this looks to have been intentionally obliterated. Any thought on why the mod was done?

No particular reason other than the original lug or lugs were broken. Officer badges such as this were used and passed down, sometimes over generations and are seen with changes in fasteners for whatever reason, usually damage.
There might have been a small marking or some ones initials on the reverse, but I don't think it was a makers mark or hallmark. Such changes don't make much difference, at least to me, when it comes to officer badges. A nice example. CB

I would think that perhaps the officer modified a Victorian badge to suit a change in headdress. The lug and tang was for the new type caps which came out in the early 1900s as far as I know.

So, examining the badge under a microscope, it’s obvious that the center lug solder spot is significantly different than the solder spots present on either wing. There’s no doubt the center lug was affixed ex post facto by a different hand.
