Default 1st Bucks Rifle Vol Corps

Have this helmet plate from the 1st Bucks Rifles Vol Corps, been trying to figure out whether the plate would have been used on a helmet or shako, and if it was used on a volunteer grey cloth home service helmet, would it have been hodden grey or "just" gray?
Thanks in advance,

According to Ray Westlake Tracing the Rifle Volunteers: Uniform grey with scarlet facings.

I think that Hodden Gray was an invention for the London Scottish only.

FromWiki :

Quote:
Hodden Grey was adopted by the London Scottish Regiment, and the Toronto Scottish Regiment (Canada). It was chosen because, as Lord Elcho said, "A soldier is a man hunter. As a deer stalker chooses the least visible of colours, so ought a soldier to be clad."
Note : "Hodden grey" is mentioned in the Robert Burns poem "A Man's a Man for a' That" which was written in 1795.

Quote:
What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hodden grey, an' a that;
Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine;
A Man's a Man for a' that.
