RM Band Portsmouth
Looking for information on this cap badge. According to Gaylor it was manufactured in error. Was if ever issued and worn? If worn would it have included the GVR cypher badge on top?
Thanks. Ian |

Ian, it's missing the cypher badge above - which from memory retains the kings crown . . .?
Don't think they are errors mate . . . No expert on all things RM though. |

Hi,
I already have this badge (photo below) in my collection. I would like to find out whether the QC on the dome version was made in error? I acquired it a few years ago and it doesn't look like a reproduction. Thanks. Ian |

The badge was not issued, but one was held by the Royal Marines Museum and the rest returned. But it seems over the years these have made it out on the open market

Thank you Stonehouse Boy. Would the unissued badge come with the EIIR/PP cypher badge?
Best regards, Ian |

Hello Ian
I stand to be corrected, but I believe a new batch of badges was ordered for the Royal Tour 1953/54, complete with ER/PP cypher. When this mistake was noticed , Major Alistair Donald RM, stated no badges were issued, and the batch returned and replaced. John

Hello Tony,
Thank you for the useful information. Even in Rawlinson's book it is not very clear how this badge came about. Your explanation makes sense and it answers my question. Now I need to find an EIIR/PP cypher to go with it. Best regards, Ian |

Ian,
I am pretty sure that the full story written by Alastair Donald is on rmhistorical.com Unfortunately the website is not currently available as it is possibly undergoing maintenance. Tim

Ian,
Glad the RM Historical site is back up. I thought there was an article about the mistake in ordering the EIIR / PP GVR KC badge but I have not found it yet. Tim
