two photo pc's to the same soldier, probably egypt 1918, his buttons under closeup appear to be Royal Engineers but he has a Prince of Wales three feathers badge on the front of his sun helmet.

This has been asked quite recently on here and I believe the answer related to the Indian Sappers and Miners connection.
Try searching under that it should pop up. regards

in the thread I linked to there is some debate as to which bn wore the P of W badge.
I have bullion collars I bought a while back, they were said to have been removed from a backing board/card and were for King George's own 1st Sappers & Miners, though the other thread states the 3rd Bn wore the P of W as their insignia.

To me the badge on the sun helmet looks very much like the one used by 3rd Sappers and Miners.

From the other thread :
Not badges but these buttons/card appear to show a possible link. 1. Bengal Sappers and Miners. 2. First Sappers and Miners. 3. 1st King George's Own Sappers and Miners - Regimental Badge Silk Cigarette Card - 1915 .

Indeed, the first bn button clearly has the p of w badge central to it, i found a few sold examples with the same iconography.

Here is my example of the 1st KGO Sappers and Miners very small one inch tall badge as shown in the photos.
I too believe that your bullion embroidered badge is likely of the same regiment, however, I do not know it's specific use. CB

this is the description for the bullion collars;
"Indian Army King George Vs Own Sappers & Miners collars Pair of Bullion collar badges originally glued to a board stating which regiment they belonged to and were worn by Captain Reginald Trevor Jones M.C whilst attached to this regiment from 1915-17, very oxidised but would possibly clean up if you were brave enough"

I also found another "KING’S INDIAN ORDERLY OFFICERS 1928" photo showing Major Ram Rup Singh, King George’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners also wearing the badge. .

I try to re-cap for myself.
Not withstanding the fact that the (1st) Bengal Sappers and Miners where only a very short time POWO (1906-1910) and then became KGO, they seem to have worn this POW feathers (with peculiar bent upright scroll) also when KGO. I think evidence is rather overwhelming. Which means that the other badges found (with crown, GRI cypher and scroll(s) where probably not used as head-dress badge. Ir also means that the badge that I have as being for the 3rd Bombay S&M is probably incorrect!. I did of course have that from other sources, but do not know anymore where from. I am thus very much interested in finding information what headdress badge the (3rd) (Royal) (Bombay) Sappers and Miners (yes many combinations 3rd, Royal and Bombay in their title over time) was. BTW, good find those King's Indian Orderly Officers.

The 1928 photo of Major Ram Rup Singh, King George’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners would suggest the badge was worn for some time.
As for the 3rd (Bombay) Sappers and Miners , plenty of shoulder titles around but I can't find any badges. I did find their insignia .(1923 ?) .
