His personal weapon came from the back of the armoury - without a sling even . . .

Difficult to tell from the angle its sloping, but it could be a carbine Martini -Henry?

Section Commander is correct.
Equivalent of Cpl& L/Cpl.

I am rather sure his 'tini is a rifle. The angle of the photo does make it a bit difficult to determine though.
