Default Diver branch

Diver branch:

The Diver branch had been in existence since Victorian times. Diving suits at that time were very large, heavy, & cumbersome. Salvage diving was also very dangerous & it took a fair amount of courage to be a diver in those pre WWI days. I have the medal group to a Diver that was killed whilst diving on duty.

Diver was not a recognized rate in those pre WWI days & any rating could qualify as a Diver. In 1919 the Diver branch was formally recognized as a rate & qualified divers rec’d their rate badge.
This badge was still in existance up to the changeover to Canadian branch badges in ’49-’50.
