It is a collar badge, and I believe this pattern was worn for sometime prior to ww1 and on into ww2.

Could be anytime between circa 1902 (when the King's crown was adopted) and 1949 (at which other ranks collar badges were changed to a pattern with a single lug rather than two lugs).
