REGIMENTAL NUMBER?
The following badge came with a small collection of material relating to the Norfolk Regiment. It is brass, 27mm high by 18mm wide on a 2.5mm flan.
Would these dimensions indicate a cap badge? If so, would it be for the 6th or 9th regiment – or a universal design for both units? If none of the above, what it could be? Kind regards, Malcolm. |

Hi Malcom.
I know that the Norfolk Regiment has its roots linked to the 9th Regiment of foot. There will be an Norfolks expert along shortly I'm sure. Regards Ry |

I'm not much help here either I'm afraid because I can't tell you where these numerals would have been worn. As an honorary member of the NRIG though I can confirm that the regiment was raised in 1685, was numbered the 9th Regiment of foot in 1751,becoming the Norfolk Regiment in 1881. Hello Ry,
Thank you for the reply. Depending on the size of the numeral, I believe this could be for a "Pork Pie" cap? I have others that are much smaller. Perhaps these might be for shoulder straps – if indeed either regiment wore them. Kind regards, Malcolm. |

Hello Sawstonjohn,
Thank you for the reply. Do you have an example/picture of a 9th Foot numeral that could be used for comparison. This would be of great interest to me. Kind regards, Malcolm. |

You are welcome Malcom,
I'd be interested to find out exactly what they are. John I was under the impression that Police numerals would have been white metal? Ry |

I agree entirely with John's comment. This looks much more like a Gurkha shoulder title numeral. To be a 'pork pie' I would expect much longer loops and a much more heavily cast numeral. Just my opinion, of course, but based upon having handled several 9th Foot 'pork pie' numerals. David

6 or 9
I have a cast 6 (or 9) pork pie cap number with the proper early cast lugs .
When I bought it I was told it was from The Crimean War (earth dug) 6th of foot Royal Warwickshires. Didn't take me long to realise the 6th were on the North West Frontier for twenty years when the Crimean took place. My 6th all of a sudden turned into a 9th of foot. I also play a similar guessing game with my 66th (or is it 99th ?) pork pie cap number. It's a good job the 19th century War Department didn't put a line underneath like bingo balls. Talking of balls............. |
