Default GPO

Any ideas on the country that wore this GPO designed badge?

It's quite large so I would think it went on a pith helmet.

Thanks for any help
John

John

The central lettering portion appears identical in design to the blade backed shoulder or collar badge worn by the British General Post Office

It does look like it has been made from 3 badges, the centre part I understand was also used as a cap badge by the General Post Office at some periods.

Don't assume that it is a badge worn by the GPO in the UK. The term was also used in many of the former (and current) UK overseas territories, and where (obviously) the Crown was also used. Royal Mail maintain an excellent museum which is on line. An enquiry there will probably give you more chance of an accurate answer to you query.

From research I have done re. GPO badges worn in South Africa.

The script badge GPO with blades was a cap badge worn in the UK as well as in the colonies. The same badge with lugs was worn as a collar badge. It was used in South Africa c.1890's through to 1930's

A crowned wreath with same title was worn by senior officials. In South Africa, this badge was in bullion, but it is possible that there was a metal version as well which may have been used in one of the colonies.

Thanks guys for the input.

My father got it from a friend of his many years ago.

It came in a bag along with.

Bahamas Police (George V) large helmet badge size

Nigeria Prisons (George V) small cap badge size

FMS Police (Federated Malay States) pre 1935 cap badge if memory serves

Malay States Volunteer Rifles cap badge plus collar dogs

So a wide spread from around the world.
