Hi Steve,
badge is officer quality though looks a bit rough to the back compared with others i have seen. Period? This style of badge for both officers and other ranks was unaltered for many years. Earliest reference i can find is the 1900 dress regulations though i might have been worn as early as 1881. Not sure when it ceased to be worn but certainly still worn after 1945 and soon replaced with the AA version some time after 1948? The officers S&G badge i believe was phased out much sooner than this, possibly after wwi but this would be an educated guess, i`m sure another member will be able to give better dates though.

Is it indeed silver and gilt? Badges made overseas, usually India or Egypt, are cast like this and the metal composition such as low grade silver approximates closely with this appearance.
It is constructed like an officer's badge and the obverse is acceptable enough in quality to call as such, I guess.
