Hi Chris
Just noticed something interesting about the 6DG button listing in Howard Ripley's book. He lists the first pattern tunic button (1855-c.1880) in gilt & brass (Off & O/R's in other words). However, when this changed to the second pattern (c.1880) he only lists it in gilt and when this pattern changed from QVC to KC (c.1902) he lists it in gilt and brass again. Three possibilities: 1) mistake in the book. 2) both officers & o/r's wore the QVC gilt version (unlikely o/r's would wear gilt officer quality buttons). 3) o/r's (but not officers) of the 6DG did wear brass general service buttons c.1880-1902 (unusual if they did because to the best of my knowledge the G/S buttons were not authorised for Cavalry Regts. Perhaps another forum member can clarify? David |

Here is a link to a Hants Carabiniers Yeomanry officer uniform which shows the tunic, leggings and buttons for comparison.

The Hampshire Carbiniers never had a red tunic. They were always in blue even in undress. From what I have seen from all the books on the Hants Yeo was that they always had "Hants Carabiniers" for the shoulder titles.
I actually haven't seen any yeomanry regts shoulder titles with a single letter for hussars lancers etc. It was always one piece ie NH for Northumberland Hussars. Check out the Smith and Knight books on the Yeomanry, very informative. The tunic is most likely an undress frock for a hussar regt. Colin |

Was the uniform worn with the Torin or the pillbox? ...... or did it matter...either or?

Pillbox for ORs, Most officers would of had pillboxes but some units might of had Torins and Yeomanry certainly had Torins too.

A 1900 labelled cavalry frock which it's been suggested is a 6 DG one (it's also been suggested that it's a RCMP one).
A shoulder chain which was sold to me as a mid 20th century one, accompanied by its mate, some embroidered RAC pips & crowns & a pair of "scissor pliars" to screw / unscrew the pips. Looks similar to the one in the first image, but I don't know the anything about the styles of these things. |

Looks very much like the frock I posted. Like this one, mine had that little bit of white on the inside, bottom rear, that I thought might be where a paper tag was glued. I found a broad arrow mark on the right sleeve - the one not reversed here.
Gentlemen, this has been great. I truly appreciate everyone's input. Chris |
