Postal strike and collecting
How are militaria collectors weathering the postal strike here in Canada? Trading activity has really slowed for me. How are dealers coping? And ebay Canada sales must be plummeting.
Other perspectives?

Canada Post strike..........
The federal government is planning to introduce back-to-work legislation Monday or Tuesday, which will force the unionized employees to return to their jobs while an arbitrator studies the standoff before imposing a ruling.
Don Martin, host of CTV's Power Play, said he has been told by sources that the bill will be tabled by the Conservatives at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The New Democrats have signalled their intention to vote against the bill, though they will be unable to stop the majority Conservatives from passing the legislation. Source:CTV News.

Hi Chaps,
As an Englishman living in the US I have a number of collector contacts in Canada, fortunately these gents are also good friends with long standing relationships so at their request I have been hanging onto items for them that I sold them a month ago. It's no trouble for me I'm happy to help but I feel for the Canadian collector who has long since paid for something special and still has not had it to 'in-the-hand' to enjoy. Roy.

Hi TRT, IF the badge is out of Canada Post's hands it shouldn't be delayed. Paypal is not affected by Canada Post, but shipping will be delayed. With legislation in the offing, things should be moving again by the end of the week.

We are still continuing to try to run "business as usual" here at Marway. We have Ebay auctions running, and I listed over over 100 new items on the website last week. The only part that is being delayed is our next auction which is ready to go online and to print, but I am holding off till everything has been settled.
I have been sending a quick email our to my buyers to let them know about the strike, and to let them know there may be a delay with sending, most have been very understanding. Today, I will be making a trip across the border to mail our USA & International customers orders items. It's about a 3 hour trip, but I feel the need to get some mail moving. |

Canada Post Strike Update
Canadian Parliament to Intervene in Postal Worker Strike
Canadian lawmakers are poised to pass legislation which would end the dispute between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. In response to a 3 weeks-long postal worker strike which legislators say has begun negatively affecting the economy, they proposed a measure would impose a settlement on the two parties and force service to resume. The CUPW began rotating strikes on June 2. Volume passing through Canada Post accordingly dropped, prompting the government-owned corporation to lock out striking workers on June 14 in an attempt to temper the cost of the strike. The Conservative government has the votes to push through the back-to-work law, but the opposition New Democratic Party plans to delay a final vote with further debate. The NDP hoped the extra time would allow an agreement to be reached without government intervention; however, negotiations stalled late Wednesday night, with both parties saying talks were unlikely to resume. In the meantime, Canadians are left without postal service, and small businesses have been especially harmed. It was their concerns which prompted lawmakers to act. A recent poll found that a majority of Canadians supported the back-to-work measure. Although the legislation is expected to pass, mail service likely won’t resume until next week at the earliest. With the NDP announcent that it will use every tactic possible to delay a vote on back-to-work legislation tabled by the Conservative governent, it looks like the end of the lock-out will take longer than originally expected. As the Canada Post strike / lock-out drags out, the impact has extended to outside courier companies like UPS, which has introduced service caps and is unable to deliver to some areas of Canada. "Since we cannot absorb all of Canada Post's intra-Canada volume, we will be limiting existing customers to a 10% increase in their normal daily volume," said an announcement on UPS.com. "Additionally, Canada Post handles a limited amount of deliveries in remote areas of Canada for transportation companies like UPS. Shipments destined to these areas can not be delivered while Canada Post's employees are locked out or on strike." FedEx has said it is open for business and has a contigency plan to deal with additional volume and customers needs. Source:E Canada Now & Canada One.

The strike is certainly not hurting cpmil's sale of Bob Russell's CEF badge collection! I've only won one of the last half-dozen bids I put in and I thought I was bidding a little OTT...

Canada Post Strike Update.....
Mail service should resume within days after weary members of the House of Commons ended a 58-hour marathon filibuster by passing back-to-work legislation for locked-out Canada Post employees.
Calling the three days of round-the-clock debate in Parliament "a completely unnecessary delay," Harper said he was "nevertheless pleased that soon Canadians will again have access to their postal service, particularly small businesses and charities." A special sitting of the Conservative-dominated Senate is expected to give the bill Royal Assent by late Sunday afternoon. It was not immediately clear how soon the mail would start moving as Canada Post would not comment because the bill was still before Parliament. The legislation actually provides members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers slightly lower wages than the last offer from Canada post. It also restricts an arbitrator to choosing between the final offers — winner take all — of the two negotiating parties on other matters. Source:Canadian Press
