Exclamation Regional Poppy Pins !

Have been told that the RBL has decided there will be no "Regional" pins as they want to "maintain the Poppy as the hero and longstanding symbol of remembrance and minimise deviation from that as the core message" !

So no Manchester/Welsh/Irish/Isle of Man pins this year , what a load of corporate bullsh*t especially when Poppy Shop was selling Easter Bunny badges and fluffy decorations !

Rant over !

Thumbs up Latest arrivals !

1. Cardboard (child's) Poppy - The British Legion produced "penny cardboard poppies" (1922-1924) which , according to newpapers at the time, were "being sold to schoolchildren only". The official one (see photo) is different to this one but it is possible that this version was also produced/sold at the same time period.

2. Paper "Haig's Fund" Poppy - Not sure if this is a British or Scottish poppy , date wise late 1940's or 1950's.

3. Small paper poppy - Same size as "childs" one but as yet I have no information if it is an "official" poppy or even if it was associated with the Poppy Appeal . No idea as to date.

Exclamation Haig's "other" fundraising .

During WW1 Earl Haig was also involved with the "Tobacco Fund" , not correct by modern standards but I'm sure the "troops" appreciated his efforts !

Default Fundraising !

Just had a quick read of the new (March 2024) RBL Membership Handbook and one item stood out :

"Fundraising - Counties/Districts and branches are not permitted to produce their own branded merchandise."

I think this is wrong , previously branches could apply to RBL for permission to produce items for their own branch or for specific events but since about 2018 they have clamped down and now it appears they have officially banned such items ! ?

Thumbs up Latest additions !

A nice 1930's poppy , in pretty good condition for its age.

A photo from 1921 of a poppy seller with a pony ! Described as being taken at Leigh on Sea but a bit of research indicates it may be Southend on Sea as a family from that area used to take their pony and trap (pony's name was Bess) into Southend for days out !

Lightbulb WW2 Austerity Poppy

Spotted this larger sized 3 petal Austerity Poppy on display at the Poppy Factory.

Previously I thought there was only standard sized 5 petal ones produced , with or without a leaf.

After years of collecting it just shows that there is still a lot we do not know !

Thumbs up United Returned Soldiers Fund

Package from Australia just arrived (posted last Saturday) !

A 1945 U.R.S. Fund poppy and 3 "Soldiers Day Poppy Appeal" badges.

Quote:
“The United Returned Soldiers' Fund which consists of the Limbless Soldiers' Association , The T.B.(Consumptive) Soldiers' Association and the Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia (N.S.W. Branch) is associated for the purpose of affording relief and assistance to the maany thousands of returned men who fought for Australia during the Great European War of 1914-1918 and who are from time to time in distress and in need of care and attention.”
I am still trying to find out if they were purely a New South Wales organisation as their poppies do not have the usual R.S.L “copyright” label ?

The metal centre "button" has U.R.S. FUND on it .

Great additions to my collection especially as I was unaware of the organisation.

A friend was in the isle of Man for the T.T. and confirmed that there are no pins being produced/sold this year .

This is yet another case of the "suits" making a stupid decision that will p!ss off members !
