Default Northern Ireland Prison Service Insignia

Hi
I’ve put together a collection of NIPS badges and insignia from around 1970 to the present day.

Exceptions are the GVI and ERII brass cap badges which fall outside this time period.

Epaulets

Auxiliary Officer 1996-2002
Officer. 1970-2015
Senior Officer 1970-2015
Principal Officer 1970-2004
Chief Officer 2. 1970-1989
Chief Officer 1. 1970-1989

Officer grade with personal number 2015- present
Senior Officer with personal number 2015-present.

Regards
Bob

Does the whistle have NIPS markings or just manufacturer's markings?

Leigh

The whistle is a standard “Metropolitan” I’ve never seen one with official markings.

John

Issued Pips and crowns come in both A/A and Chrome.

NIPS always go for the cheapest available ?

Regards

Bob

Thanks, just wondered (I still have a RUC marked one that I wore for years, given to me around 1981 when their band visited Peterborough it "replaced" my issue "Metropolitan" that I'd loaned to someone).

Nice to see
I note cap insignia and epaulettes generally the same as English and Welsh HMP, the button is of a different design and metal numbers have not been worn this side of the Irish Sea.
Regards
Stephen

Default Northern Ireland Prison Service

Hi Stephen

Due to the security situation NIPS staff cannot wear name tags and the personal identification numbers were allocated to make it easier for prisoners and visitors to identify staff when making trivial complaints.

Embroidered numbers are attached with Velcro strips to jackets.

Regards

Bob
