Duke of Aosta CoA
Hi All
A friend of mine has this badge of the Duke of Aosta's coat of arms, apparently liberated by a South African when the Duke was captured in WWII. He would like to know what it would be used for? It has been tested for 99% silver and the maker is a well known Italian maker. Could it be a personal aides badge or a livery badge of sorts? Or maybe even a badge of office for the duke? Thanks, cheers, Alex |

Some information on Prince Amedeo who was 3rd Duke of Aosta 1931-1942.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prin..._Duke_of_Aosta Certainly an extremely fine item, having googled the Dukes I cannot see any of them wearing that piece in portrait photographs. The chain struck me as perhaps a bit plain in comparison to their other regalia? |

The badge itself is an attractive item.

Yes, the chain does look a bit plain but then I realised it is supposed to be knots, very like the Staffordshire knot, so there must be some sort of heraldic significance to the design.

Very possibly Alex. At first glance before I’d fully read your post the whole item had a very ecclesiastical feel to it, especially the chain. Did he have his own priest I wonder?

It is a cracking badge….a beautiful and elegant design.

That's a very good suggestion! Quite a good possibility.
