Handsworth Grammar School Hat Badge??
Good day gentlemen
I'm told by another forum member that Handsworth Grammar school wore a w/m knot up until just after the 2nd War. Staffordshire Yeo was in brass. Also note the short slider. Is this an example of a Handsworth Grammar school badge? Thanks |

I am sorry that I cannot answer your question but I am very fortunate to be on the mailing list for the newsletter of the old West Midlands Branch of the Military Historical Society produced by Jake Whitehouse the former Chairman and author of a number of military books.
The badge of Handsworth Grammar School OTC was the subject of a short article in the newsletter in January 2010. It may be of some interest so is shown below. P.B.

As the article says Handsworth has been part of Birmingham for many years. It did used to be part of Staffordshire. The Stafford knot is found on the school badge, also there were S.Staffs volunteers in Handsworth too.
As a foot note . Its my old school. |

This link takes you to a studio photo of Handworth Cadet pre WW1
https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...-otc-307541989 The photo is hyperlinked to the worthpoint site and is not uploaded to this website so no Copyright issue. The Staffordshire knot cap badge is clear with the King's Crown. It's not clear which metal the badge is made of. The buttons are just as bright and they would be brass. I suspect white metal as it has a King's Crown which was the same as the Staffordshire regt of the time. If they were wearing the Staffordshire Yeomanry badge then the crown would be the QVC one on a brass badge. Last edited by Alan O; 17-08-20 at 06:07 PM. |
