Default Silver 11th (Lonsdale) Battalion Cap Badge

Silver badges being outside my comfort zone I would appreciate members views on this HM Lonsdale Battalion badge.

Due to the silver and its tarnish reflecting the light it’s an absolute bugger to photograph and get a faithful image of how it looks to the naked eye.

These are the best I could do with an iPhone. Hopefully the forum size limit doesn’t scupper them too much.

Luke,

It looks a spot on original Sebastian Garrard made badge to me.

The hallmark is crisp, in the correct place and without a flaw line through it that some silver fakes have.

The original fittings still present which are often removed and converted to a brooch.

A nice badge.

regards

Thank you both. This is one of the few badges that gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I do like this one however.

Any more comments from anyone with one of these?

I contacted Dixon Pickup and Geoff Newman both of whom gave it a thumbs up and whilst Bosley’s maintained their no comment policy when rephrased and asked if they’d sell it the answer was yes pending an inspection.

So overall positive I’d say, so far.

Hi Luke,

I am certainly no expert, but I see it conforms to all the good ones I have pics of. The fittings and hallmarks look spot on, and I'll agree with Gerard: F... Me, what a beauty!

cheers, Tim

Many thanks Tim. Needless to say I think I’ll be taking it easy for a while and keeping it hidden from the wife!

Hope you and the family are good.

Cheers,

Luke

Thankfully not Frank but even she realises that silver badges are rather dear and outside my usual price range.

First post so please be gentle............ !

A recent purchase, I believe it's genuine and correct but would welcome member's opinions.

Thanks.

Looks good to me Mike, in my opinion it shows all you would expect from a genuine example.

However, if you can provide a clearer image of the hallmark, it will confirm it.

Reason being, there have been some produced where the last part of the hallmark is somewhat indecipherable, leading to potentially fake items.

Regards.

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thank you for your reply. I've attached a more close up photo of the HMs (as best as I can get with my camera) which, hopefully, may help.

Regards,

Mike

Found this :

Quote:
Silver hallmark, on the back of the dragon’s wing, for London 1914, maker Sebastian Garrard. Cast line through the mark has been described as a possible sign of a fake.

I agree with Brian and also think your badge is good Mike.

Good crisp lettering with no casting flaws, nice detail to the beasts body not smooth as seen on the cast copies.

First hand I know the hallmarks are difficult to photograph faithfully but yours looks OK.

On many copies the bottom border of the date letter ‘t’ disappears and just merges with the rest of the reverse, there is also often a horizontal divot spanning the t and leopards head. That yours lacks either is a positive sign.
