British Army Leather strap.

Amongst possessions that I have inherited I have come across two single strap loop Sam Browne belts of the type issued from about 1916 until WW2 and with them have found am unusual (at least to me) belted strap which has the leather split and bevelled at both ends. It measures some 43 inches / 110 cm long. I attach pictures of it and would like to know its purpose please.

I think that might be the leather strapping for an officers bedroll or valise. They were privately purchased so different designs exist.

Thanks for the idea Tim, but if it was I would expect two loops, but this only has one smallish sliding strap/loop.

There is an enormous amount of variation in tack, differences for riding and towing, horses mules etc and perhaps I'm the wrong end of the animal, the handle/loop thingamy could be a crupper?

I tend to agree with you regarding it being an item of horse tackle, but I don't think it quite works as a crupper Rob.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Rob. Its a an horses Bridle, including Browband or Headstall. The band sits on the top of the head with the horses ears behind the sliding strap and main belt around the back up the head. The end straps and buckles then hang down with straps being tied under the chin, and the looped buckles being fixed to to metal rings leading to the bit. Or something like that...
