Thanks for your help! Your article show the book I was talking about...but the problem is that my fs cap is not there...mine has no braid as D Cornwall...but D Cornwall has gilder buttons., and mine has black... QVR, Kings Royal Corps has black buttons (as mine!) but has black braid (mine not)...so...
By the way...congratulations for your blog...was one of the first sites I frecuented when I started to learn about british badges!!!...and I still do! |

DLI had rifle brigades?

Just because it does not have black braid does not mean anything. Units did change items occasionally and different Regts and Battalions had different traditions and ways of doing things. It could be all sorts of things but because it has blackened buttons (if they are original to the cap) would mean its RB or a Volunteer rifle unit. It can also just be a tailors way of doing things, units did have Regt tailors.

An interesting cap and much of the information on fs caps that has been published seems inconclusive and often inaccurate from my research. the lack of information on the different grade of caps for the different ranks makes it difficult combined with the above mentioned inaccuracies to be certain on so many caps. I assume yours is best id'd by the buttons, rifle brigade or whomever else used black rifles buttons on a green fs cap regardless of piping, probably for an other ranks I have a plain green fs cap with gm light infantry buttons which came with a somerset li badge and I am happy that it is correct

2nd and 4th VB DLI both wore green with red piping so I doubt that it would be DLI.

My green FS cap has general service brass buttons not LI ones.

Well...I think that the conclusion it is that there is not a final conclusion! Probably there are so much "not very official" practices and variants to be sure...so I think that a Rifle Brigade is the more apropiate...but KRC too...so while I think about it is possible that complete the cap wit the D Cornwall I have...and in the future and with more information I will change it...(or not! )
Thanks a lot to all of you for your kindness and usefull help! |

I have two DLI caps in my collection both with the DLI buttons...as shown on the example shown in the original thread.
No piping or any other colours except the rifle green. One of mine came from a father of an ex-girlfriend who was a WO2 in the DLI. hope this helps. The buttons are for the DLI. The RB wore different buttons. KSLI wore an all green cap but lighter in colour. I have a 1941 reference pamphlet in colour showing most of the regiments/corps etc and some Commonwealth too. I had quite a collection of side caps including one from the DLI which was grey in colour with piping and came from the 6th or 8th Bn. The regular Bn's only wore the rifle green one. |
