Default Essex Regiment Cast Badge

Would welcome comments on the attached badge, clearly not an issue item and believed to be WW2 period.

The slider is stamped with "Eden 43". Manufacturer and date or the soldier's name and last two?

Jon

John,

The addition of a number, ie '43' is typical of wartime Indian manufacture.

42 and 43 being the commonest and presumably the year of manufacture.

Eden will be the maker.

regards

Default Eden & Co.

Hi Jon

Back in 2014 I did a bit of digging with regards to Indian badge makers, and posted up the results to this thread. I even managed to find a specific trade directory entry for Eden & Co. from 1940-41, which is here, and who, if I recall correctly, were in Aligarh in the United Provinces, now Uttar Pradesh. Like Simon says, the “43” is most likely 1943, and so the year of manufacture.

Best regards

Martin

Thank you. Your earlier thread on Indian badge manufacturers is fascinating, first class research. Well done.

Default Indian Badge Makers Research

Hello Jon

Glad you liked my old postings about Indian makers, and at least you now know a little more about your badge and who made it. I do see that whilst Eden & Co. were listed in that trade directory as being in Aligarh, the entry does say their “Hd Office” was in Sialkot, which I understand was in the Punjab (the part now in Pakistan). Anyhow, as I say, I’m pleased things were of use to you, and only wish I had the time to do more research!

Best regards

Martin
